Alex J Winfield and the JOURNEY OF AN ALBUM

  • Slowly coming together

Well it’s been a little while since my last blog.   I guess I was on kind of a musical slump, just kind of going with the flow and enjoying the end of the summer.   I actually almost took a full commission sales job that would have taken a lot more of my time and put my already slack music career even further to the back of the shelf.   The day after I had told the IT Company that I was going to work for them, I talked with Tim Roberts the head sound engineer at Soul Haven Studios.   I told him about the idea of recording the album I had been working on for the last few years and since that album had been so influenced by Steph’s battle with Cancer I felt that we should give a portion of the album proceeds towards the American Cancer Society.   He thought the idea was great and since the battle against cancer was something personal to him as well, he wanted to get started on the project right away.   He said he had wanted to do an album with me after working together on a previous song, and now he was even more interested since the project had such a positive and meaningful purpose.   After meeting with both the Soul Haven owners Tim and Mike Paleno we decided to take on this crazy project.

I guess the project is finally starting to move.   Starting with my ideas and internal jut box, propelled by Steph’s battle with cancer, and backed by the skills and talent of the Soul Haven Project this crazy vision seems to be slowly piecing together.

Next I said a prayer, Got my old job back, and quickly put together a to-do list that seems to be growing exponentially.

    1. Figure out how we can make this project financially possible
    2. figure out how this album will benefit American Cancer Society, Soul Haven Studio, my self, and anyone else involved
    3. Start filling in the blanks on some of my half finished songs
    4. Start Pre-recording songs on Garage Band
    5. Practice extra on the Sax and Vocals
    6. Better define my style of music so we can capture it on this album
    7. Contact the Local American Cancer Society
    8. Start putting a Fundraising team together
    9. Put together something like a Business Plan, time line, and goals list
    10. Find Musicians
    11. Etc……………….

Well I think you get the idea.  There seems to be a lot to do.    I guess I just have to go one step at a time.  I guess…..

  • First Live Show... 7/29/07

    Alex J’s Blog    07.29.07

Well things got going pretty quick.   A couple days after I started the Blog I was invited to participate in a concert put on by Soul Haven Studios in Virginia Beach.   At first I was reluctant to play since I had no band and was just getting started with this project.      But, I also saw that this was a great opportunity.    For one, I would be able to get my unheard original music in front of a good crowd.    Secondly I would have the opportunity to play with the great musicians of the Studio band, and last this would be my chance to get this project rolling while proving to myself and any ears out their that music is burning in my blood stream.

After one stressful week and two rehearsals with the studio band we were somewhat ready for the show.   I was the second act at the Jewish Mother that Night (July 8, 2007), following the tight rock band Truck which was made up of some old friends of mine.   All I remember was that when we started the music things just felt good.   The band sounded tight, the crowd was more into it every minute, and the fact that I was playing and singing music I created and believed in simply warmed my soul.    When I finished my short set with the applause of the crowd, all I needed was approval from my wifes smile.   When I saw that smile I knew the show was a success for me and a good time for those attending.

Of course I wanted more then two practices, and of course I wanted more time to arrange and prep my new songs, but opportunity arose and I had to grab it.   Thanks to the last minute Invite from Mickey and the crew at Soul Haven I’m ready to make this project a reality. (Whatever that means)     That first gig gave me the confidence in my musical skills and song writing abilities, but even more importantly it highlighted in my mind the wonderful feeling of doing something I love and believe in.

    Here’s the deal….

I’ve been writing an album for about the last 6 or 7 years of my life, and  I don’t know if I’m going to do another album, so I want to do it right.   Here’s the deal: I’m not in a band, I’m just recently married, a new homeowner, I work a daytime 9 to 5, and don’t have a lot of time or money.   Regardless, I’m gonna somehow figure how to make this one badass album that ends up being heard by a lot of people.

You see, for the last 4 years I’ve been a partner in the music website www.UnderSound.com, I’ve played saxophone with dozens of artists, and have promoted all kinds of music other than my own.   Well, I’m ready to promote my own music and message.  I mean, isn’t that part of being an artist?  Also, I think music is my calling from God, and usually when I don’t answer God’s calls bad things tend to happen.  .    One advantage I have over most is that I’ve received a lot of inspiration in the creation of the album and have gained a true purpose in sharing my music with everyone I can.   Three years ago my wife, who at the time was my fiancé, had a vicious battle with cancer.   Two major back surgeries, two sessions of chemo, double doses of radiation for over a month straight, and thousands of prayers later she defeated the cancer.   This painful but purposeful experience has affected my perspective on life and my calling in life in a new way.   That’s why I want to get this album to as many people as possible and raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer in the process.

How am I going to do it?  Well, that’s going to be a work in progress.   I’ll be using my experience and contacts I’ve gained working in the music industry for the last few years, knowledge I’ve gained through books I’ve read and websites I’ve visited, and advice from people who have “been there before.”   As far as not having much money you ask?   Well, I’m gonna put my bucks in the right places and use these neat things called the “Internet”, “Friends”, and “Hard Work” to make it all happen.   And most importantly, I’m going to be creative as all get out and say a lot of prayers before bed at night.

Now, about why I’m even telling you this…  I want you guys to come along for the ride.   I want to record all this info as I go along to see what works and what doesn’t work.  Each week I’ll be posting a new blog on the progress made on the Album, its promotion, and new ideas me or someone else spits out.     I would love to get your advice in the meantime.  I preach all the time to different bands and artists that to be a successful band or artist you have to be unique, talented, innovative, and business minded.   I guess its time to practice what I preach and see if all the B.S. I’ve been speaking over the years really works.     Here we go...........

    Peace,

    Alex J
